6 Front Door Ideas to Enhance Your Curb Appeal

Soiree-HR-23-1080x1621-71e7c34

The entrance door is often the first example of your home's personality and an integral part of your curb appeal. Therefore, a proactive approach to your home frontage will provide the perfect introduction to your residence.

For the ultimate transformation, we consult home design experts to explore various front door ideas, including types of door handles that will positively impact your home entrance.

1. Consider the Colour of Your Front Door

While earthy tones are often the go-to for entry door colour ideas, a splash of vibrant colour can better personalise your entrance. Decide whether you want it to blend in with your current frontage or stand out to make a statement. For instance, your door could tease your interiors — mirroring the colours within. Regardless, enhancing your front door entrance is key to a welcoming residence.

“The colour of a front door should reflect the homeowner's personality — bold red, classic navy blue, playful pink, or modern mustard — it has as much to do with making an impression as it is suiting the architecture of the house,” says property stylist, Kylie Harding.

“Consider the colour selection of your front door in relation to its orientation towards the sun,” says Mark O’Connell, a design-build professional who specialises in custom spaces.

“Front doors that receive a lot of afternoon sun, particularly west-facing doors, can absorb heat and expand if painted a dark colour such as black or dark grey. This expansion could make your door difficult to open and close and potentially deteriorate the door quicker than would be expected if painted a lighter colour.”

2. Different Types of Door Handles

Selecting the right front door handle is equally integral to redefining your entryway aesthetic.

"Door handles are the handshake of a home, the first touchpoint that sets the tone for what lies beyond,” says Nikki Bisiker of Orli Interiors

“A well-crafted handle not only welcomes, but it whispers craftsmanship, invites tactile exploration, and hints at the unique personality dwelling within."

ABI Interiors offers a collection of beautiful, high-quality front door handles. Available in four of our signature colour finishes and various natural stone finishes, our thoughtfully designed range has been built for longevity.

The collection includes highly durable half-moon door pulls in brushed brass, brushed copper, and stainless steel finishes. We also offer them in our natural stone finishes: Carrara marble and travertine.

In addition, we have door pulls with convenient, fully adjustable fixing collars. These can be aligned with existing fixing points or customised to specific requirements to help easily refresh the look of your front entry.

3. Personalise Your Porch

Bringing personality to your porch is an important way to enhance your curb appeal. Consider sprucing up your porch with aesthetic planters or even characterful door knockers.

“Hardware, pot plants, and door mats can all add, or detract from creating a crucial first impression of 'what lies beyond’,” continues Kylie.

“Pot plants can add colour, dimension, and even fragrance — think lavender or jasmine — to your porch. Hardware and door mats give an additional chance to add character and style, but remember that too much is too much. Have one or two points of interest in the space, as more than that can create sensory overload.”

4. Importance of Signage

Signage is another door entry design idea. A stylish house number or nameplate can significantly impact and even personalise the appearance of your home, contributing to the overall appeal of an entrance.

“Door signage is a great way to make a statement — whether it’s a practical sign using your family name, a welcoming gesture, or something that reflects the design or location,” continues Kylie.

“I named my seaside cottage ’Shoalhaven’ after a coastal village. No matter what the name, keep it short, simple, and special to you.”

ABI Interiors offers a range of house signage for the home that is aligned to provide elegance and consistency. Constructed from highly durable 316 stainless steel to withstand external conditions, our numbers, symbols, and letter signage are available in brushed brass, stainless steel, and brushed gunmetal finishes.

5. Enlighten Your Door

When lighting your entryway, safety and ambience should be your top priorities. Strategically placed entrance lighting not only makes your entryway more accessible at night but can also make it much more inviting.

“The front entry is the first impression to not only guests but how your home greets you as you walk through the door,” says Daniel Johnson, director of Immaculate Homes based in Sydney’s North Shore.

“Dependent on the day, providing as much natural light into the space is a must. This can then be supplemented with a large light fitting and softened with wall lights.”

“Well-placed sconces or overhead lights can highlight your entrance and improve safety,” Michael Campbell of Concrete Repairs Services adds.

“These small touches can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of your home.”

6. Add a Bench

Adding a bench is an inviting and characterful way to enhance your entryway aesthetic. A wooden bench would provide a point of difference and introduce an organic element that is effortlessly welcoming, cosy, and functional.

Whatever front entry door ideas you implement to enhance your entrance, remember that it’s all about creating a memorable first impression that reflects your individuality — all of which can positively contribute to your home’s curb appeal.
