Inside Mackenzie & Reuben Cotter's Moditerranean Family Home
Behind the Design
Nestled in the quiet streets of Queensland's Townsville, Bisque is the carefully considered family home of Mackenzie and Reuben Cotter, named for the gentle mood it effortlessly creates.
Associated with elegance, warmth, and calm, the home unfolds through a palette of soothing neutrals, enriched by soft pink undertones, layered texture, and a considered rhythm of arches and curves.
Mackenzie shares, “When I thought about words that captured how we wanted the home to feel, the word Bisque kept appearing.”
From arched windows and brushed brass tapware to Florentine walnut cabinetry and Turkish Delight marble, each space unfolds as a considered composition of elegant design tailored to the pace of family life.
The couple look back on how their surroundings influenced the build, having both relocated to Townsville after finishing school and always imagining it as the place they'd eventually start a family.
Now realised in the form of their dream home, that vision feels deeply anchored. As Reuben shares, “Townsville is home for us now. We said we’d love to one day build a family home here in this area.”
From the first step inside, the signature design language of Bisque reveals itself — soft blush and cream checkerboard tiles establish the palette, while a pair of archways gently draw you deeper into the home.
In the open-plan living zone, the space is softened by diffused light filtering through sheer curtains, layered against the gentle texture of creamy render. Deeper brown tones ground the scheme, carried through walnut kitchen cabinets, the linear timber kitchen island, and the chocolate-brown sofa.
Mackenzie explains, “We wanted to let in as much natural light as we could; we again incorporated arches in our windows and the roundness of our TV cabinet. As you can see in the house, there are lots of curves and arches, which I think create that really cosy feeling.”
The kitchen takes centre stage in the living space, its statement stone establishing the home’s feeling of understated luxury.
Rich rose and gold accents come together through Turkish Delight marble, complemented beautifully by a brushed brass finish with a warm metallic hue that mirrors the stone's organic veining.
With a shared passion for cooking and gathering over meals, creating a warm, inviting kitchen was a priority in the design. “We wanted to make it an area where you don’t have to rush away from; you can spend time here enjoying each other's company,” explains Reuben.
In the primary suite, the home's recurring theme of soft, flowing curves carries through, crafting a serene escape that feels distinctly set apart from the rest of the house.
Mackenzie shares, “We really wanted this space to feel warm, so we used walnut cabinetry complemented by the brushed brass, which we’ve carried throughout the home.”
From one space to the next, design decisions carry through with subtle variation, allowing each area to maintain its own sense of identity. In the ensuite, a Mediterranean-inspired double shower is clad in soft blush subway tiles, which seamlessly extend across the floor to create a cohesive finish.
Complete with curved mirrors, white bubble sconces, and the circular silhouette of our Milani Collection, the space strikes a balance between playfulness and poise.
Being the Cotter family's dream home, tailored to their everyday lifestyle, Bisque extends beyond its interiors to a considered outdoor setting, complete with an alfresco, barbecue, pool, outdoor shower, and a dedicated wellness area designed to support Reuben’s training and recovery.
“The wellness area is a very important part of the house for me. Being an athlete, I really enjoy doing extra recovery and the mental side of recovery, and I feel like this is perfect for my lifestyle and what I do for work,” Reuben shares.
Across every detail of Bisque, Mackenzie and Reuben bring a deeply individual sensibility to their modern Mediterranean interior design choices — one where sophistication and grace blend seamlessly with the ease of everyday family life.
