A Modest Exterior Conceals The Surprises of this Charming Cottage Renovation | House Tour

ABI Interiors

Cottage renovations can be intriguing revelations. From the outset, they often look like modest and conventional abodes. However, by probing inside, their true potential comes into view. Hazlewood, an old workers' cottage renovation located in Brisbane from Favell Architects, is one such place.

This Brisbane house belies its rather quaint streetscape exterior as soon as you enter — architecturally, high ceilings create an incredible void from which floating pendants hang, revealing a resort-style exuberance.

High ceilings continue into the kitchen, making room for a natural light-emitting skylight. Heavily-veined Carrara marble kitchen benchtops and oak flooring add further distinction to this space, populated by off-white kitchen cabinetry and Zellige tiles dramatically climbing to the ceiling.

ABI Interiors’ brushed brass tapware adds refinement to the predominately white scheme, as does the strategic stonework — the veined detailing continues from the island benchtop leg to the backsplash, shelving, and even tastefully dons the side of the cabinetry.

The open-plan living area continues Hazlewood's grand architectural revelations with a day bed that runs the length of the wall, complete with convenient hideaway storage beneath.

Upstairs, you’re confronted by the prospect of a resourceful second living area leading to the master wing and an ensuite that enjoys the grand architectural feat of a curved shower, skylight, brushed brass showerhead, and an indulgent freestanding bath.

The vanity contributes to the art of this space — with seamless statement-making Zuri Round Undercounter Basins, the continuation of the cream veiny stones for the countertop and splashback, and brushed brass tapware providing the perfect finishing touch.

The actual cottage extension takes in an additional floor with multiple bedrooms, where VJ panelling wraps around the walls, cementing a nice nod to the original cottage facade. Furthermore, french windows with a brass handle and the Carrara marble in another bathroom hark back to a heritage style and blend with more modern Australian touches like pink marble and pink Zellige tiles.

The original modest workers' cottage entrance has now been rather cleverly converted into a convenient balcony seating space for relaxing during those warm summer nights.

This timeless cottage renovation has been an absolute revelation where neutral tones, stone, and carefully selected colour tapware are essential elements in its exceptional structural conception.
